Sydney, the city with the best reputation worldwide. Brussels is making significant progress.

17 October 2013 - Today, the Reputation Institute, of which the strategic communications agency akkanto is the exclusive associate for Belgium, released the results of the 2013 City RepTrak®. This is an annual study designed to measure and assess the reputation of 100 cities around the world. Brussels scores 70.8, coming in 28th place. This score marks an improvement of 4 points compared to last year, as well as an increase of three places in the ranking. Sydney is the city with the best reputation worldwide with a score of 77.4, followed by Toronto and Stockholm. The measurement is carried out among a representative sample of respondents from each of the G8 countries, resulting in a reputation analysis from an external perspective.

The City RepTrak® score measures the reputation of a city on the basis of four indicators: trust, esteem, admiration and feeling. Furthermore, 13 related attributes are measured, including business environment, culture, infrastructure, physical beauty and effective administration. A reputation score of 70 and above is considered as 'strong and robust'.

Walter Gelens, Partner at akkanto, comments: “It is very encouraging to see that the reputation of Brussels is on the rise among stakeholders abroad. The challenge for Brussels is to also ensure a good reputation level among Belgians and the citizens of Brussels. Policy makers should systematically manage Brussels’ reputation, taking into account all stakeholders. This will ultimately lead to tangible results such as an increasing number of tourists, an influx of talent, more enterprises and an increase in investments.”

Mélanie McCluskey, Senior Consultant & Reputation Management expert at akkanto , adds: "At a time when cities are the distinguishing mark of a country, Brussels succeeds in surpassing several important cities, such as Berlin, Lyon, Los Angeles and Milan. Although Brussels is often the subject of political debates and regularly has to contend with local criticism, it is an important asset in the positioning of the country and its regions."
