Darwinism at work: adapt or become extinct

Darwinism is never far away, not even – or especially not – within a business context. “Change is the healthiest way to survive”, Karl Lagerfeld once wisely tweeted. Indeed, ‘adapt or become extinct’ doesn’t only apply to the animal kingdom. Change management is concerned with changing business processes, the structure or culture of an organisation. Clear communication is key to these change initiatives and helps make the process of change run smoothly and efficiently.

Unfortunately, this process doesn’t always run like clockwork. Studies show that only 1 out of 2 change initiatives reach their initial objectives. However, companies cannot afford to lose time, money, energy and the goodwill of their employees.

So, what’s the solution to this problem? We at akkanto are convinced that the key to success has 4 elements to it: first of all, you need to define a set of desired behaviours and write a compelling story to make your message clear and convincing. Then, you create a base of supportive leadership functions to help spread your message and, lastly, you appoint ambassadors who wholeheartedly support the culture change initiatives, which leads to a lasting result in the long run.

Strong interaction between a top-down movement of managers and peer-to-peer movement propelled by carefully chosen ambassadors – that’s where we believe the opportunity lies to initiate change in organisational culture and, more specifically, in the behaviour of employees.
